how does using acrylic paint compare to using real nail polish?
i feel like acrylic would be weird to put directly on nails..

they are diffrent mediums but essentially theyre the same. Before I begin any set, I always lay down a base coat. Its really important for proper adhesion and seal. You create a sandwich effect of polish/ acrylic/ top coat. This makes the set weather, shower, chip proof for atleast 5 Days.

The main difference between acrylic and laquer, aside from chemical components is the drying time. Acrylic dries pretty fast so it makes it way easier to paint in multiple layers.

Acrylic also kicks ass because if you understand color theory or basic mixes (red+yellow= orange, blue+yellow=green, blue+ red= Purple), you get a huge range of shades that sometimes dont exsist, or are available but just really expensive.

If you want the finish to be smooth you dont want to lay down too many brush strokes. The less the strokes the smoother the surface.

So theres a lot goin on in this tutorial but i have faith that no matter what level of nail artistry your at, this tutorial will help you to understand the layering process of my graphic style.

First i made some thumbnail sketches of what i wanted to be on each finger.
I got inspired durring class please disregard the nonsense in the paper. So within this layout you see the missiles, tank girl flipping the bird, the logo, checker print pattern, smoking gun and of course TankGirl!

Next i filed my nails into a square shape. please disregard the unevenness… i had a fight with my drawer, and the drawer won.. : (. I love the nail files by TokiDoki. Sure its probably no better than your $1 nail file at Rite Aide But its so freaking cute that i takes a little bit of the boredom out of the nail shaping process…

Next i like to coat my nails with any protective hardening polish. Here im using Sally Hansen Advanced Hard as Nails. It’s one of my favorites that really does a good job of keeping my nails strong so that the paint wont crack if my nails bend, if you have soft nails that fold and tear easily, the paint wont last very long. After the protective clear coat im using Butters of London Come To Bed Red, this is the juiciest red polish that i own and the shine is quite amazing plus they pride themselves on keeping their products free of toxic chemicals. And lastly My Luscious deep rust tone Samba #14 by Chanel.

Here i separated the middle finger to add variety and a contrasting tone. Plus its funny, you can flip people off with style.. lol

This is my weapon of choice, Its a regular fine tip 1inch brush, however i modified it by taking my Hair thinning scissors( yes i do hair too!) fanning out all the bristles and cut them in 3 snips towards the edge of the tip. This allows me to get super thin lines and actually helps with controlling the paint.

I created a flesh tone with my acrylic paints. Theyre perfect for nail art because once its dry and protected with a top coat its everything proof, shower, chip and tear proof for atleast 5 days. Here is the ouline of her face with the whites of her eyes. This will almost always be the base whenever you do a character painting

Next i painted in the band-aid on her brow

Then after the black line details, take your time and go slowly, because nail art is painting on a small canvas just remember that little stokes are all you need.

To perpetuate her badassness i got the idea to give her a ciggarette with some really pretty smoke details with light grey and white.

Next i made her blond pompadour and bangs

Then i gave her blonde hair some black details to show depth and added some black dots to show the shaved sides of her head, i also outlined the bandaid.

For the middle finger i just added some white for the nail and them went over the hand according to my sketch, Its good to have a reference as you go along so you dont get stuck. I also finished up my black outlines on my lettering as well.

on the index finger youll notice that i began my checker patterns. Checkers are one of my fav patterns, and it looks complex but its actually really simple start with a 3 block formation and build by connecting the corners.

Finally add top coat, and then BAM!! Bad ass tank girl nails… i hope this tutorial encourages you to break down basic images and paint them on your nails! And remember painting is all about patience and practice. Everyone has a chance to make their skills grow. I read on tumblr all the time about girls saying.. “i wish i had the skill” it just takes practice, dont be discouraged! Please message me if you have any questions, I LOVE messages ^_^

because i sure as hell am… So last night i made a TankGirl Nails per sissesofie ’s request. I can tell that shes really into nail art so i decided to dedicate my first tutorial to her… im enthralled with the results and i hope u will be too. Im just working on the verbage so itll be posted sometime today….. i think… hopefully… if my free time between classes permit
